Release date: October 22, 2021

Jake Ward, frontman for indie rock duo Eureka California, recently took to his home studio and completed work on his first solo album, Never Had A Touch To Lose, to be released under the name Mild Mild Country, via HHBTM Records.

Fans expecting to hear Eureka California’s crunchy, literate indie-rock will be in for a surprise; Never Had A Touch To Lose is a fully instrumental affair. Furthermore, it’s a very epic affair, to boot; the four songs clock in at 48 minutes. But the best part of this is how it sounds: Ward has composed a soundtrack to one hell of a detective movie, one set in LA (which is where the album was recorded) and one can easily hear the streets throughout the album’s groove.

Never Had A Touch To Lose fits nicely between Tangerine Dream’s Thief soundtrack and Wang Chung’s score for To Live And Die In LA. But it’s not all 80s synth landscapes; here and there, you’ll find notes of post-punk, a little shade of Blues, as well as some splendid guitar playing that reminds us of noise rockers Trans Am.

We encourage you to sit down and listen to Never Had A Touch To Lose in one go; it’s an exciting and gritty story that will keep you at the edge of your seat.

When we started Happy Happy Birthday To Me twenty-one years ago, we did so in hopes of sharing the music of the outsider. Simple but smart, earnest but lighthearted -- bands and musicians who channeled a real sense of self without conforming to the musical status quo. People who not just marched to the beat of their own drum, but built that drum themselves. Naturally, we found inspiration in the work of late Texas poet and musician Daniel Johnston—a man more intent in getting his feelings set to tape than he was about sound quality. He understood—even if only on a subconscious level—that the sound of hiss and noise not only didn’t matter, it made his words of hope and heartbreak and fear and desire even more special. We were honored to have him perform at the 2007 Athens Popfest; his set will forever be one of our greatest Popfest performances.

Jump to 2016. We were thrilled to have Daniel Johnston return to Athens Popfest as our special guest and festival headliner. We had to provide his backing band, so we put together an in-house super-duper backing group featuring Jesse Stinnard from Antlered Aunt Lord / Tunabunny and Jake Ward and Marie A. Uhler from Eureka California. Daniel gave us some leeway and some direction for his setlist, and once settled, the band recorded it and sent Daniel a copy so he could rehearse. Unfortunately, the day of the show, the Gulf Coast was hit with a tropical depression, and all flights from Houston were grounded.

We at HHBTM wanted to pay tribute to one of our biggest influences. After some time passed, we listened to the practice recordings, and we knew what we had to do—but we knew we had to make it special. Thus we present you with some of those recordings, The Daniel Johnston Covers Tape, packaged on limited edition cassette with only 100 copies being made. The setlist offers a healthy mix of his classic songs and deeper cuts from all points in his career. Like the spontaneous, raw recordings of his Stress Records releases, Antlered Auntlord: The Daniel Johnston Covers Tape captures a moment in time from when Daniel was an “is” and not a “was.” Any other tribute would have fallen short; Daniel was life, not death, and while his passing should be mourned, his music should never be treated mournfully.

On their debut album Big Cats Can Swim, the Athens, Georgia trio Eureka California crash and bash through 11 songs in 28 minutes. The songs are short jolts of indie rock/guitar pop powered by the combo of Marie A. In just under a year since releasing their last album “Versus,” Eureka California are back with a new single, “Wigwam.” The band had a set plan in mind when going into the studio: get in and knock it out and release a single to hold over ‘til recording the next full length. With “Versus” they went overseas to the UK and recorded at Suburban Home, but for “Wigwam” they decided to record here in their hometown of Athens, Georgia, with Dave Barbe (Sugar / Mercyland / Dave Barbe & the Quick Hooks) at his Chase Park Transduction Studio. Wasting no time, they recorded and mixed the single in one afternoon. A single on a tight budget, three tracks in under 8 minutes, hand-decorated sleeves -- everything about this is economical. Eureka California have two brand new tracks, “Wigwam” and “Only Birds (No Feathers)”, and a cover of Superchunk’s “Slack Motherfucker.”

Both the band and their label HHBTM Records wanted to make a statement with this single. The current trend is labels charging upwards of $7 for singles -- they are bringing the 7” pricing back down to reality and selling the single for $3 direct and hopefully no higher than $5 in stores (can’t really control how stores mark up records). By recording, mixing, and mastering in one session, and by getting creative and DIY on the sleeve both, band and label can let them sell for roughly cost. There was a time when labels used singles like an advertisement to get people to buy the full length album. A promotional item. No one really thought of singles as something you do to make money. So, not only did HHBTM make the single $3, but went back and marked all their back catalog singles down to $3 as well.

Roadrunners by Eureka California comes a decade in for the band, and it’s a record only possible to write by having had that span of time to cycle through members, tour and sleep on endless floors or when there are no floors in the van at rest stops or Wal-Mart parking lots, argue over where to eat, turn around after missing exits, log those relentless hours of driving all day to get to the venue only to sit around hours and hours more ‘til performing. A decade of side hustles and and soul-sucking jobs just to be able to go on the road and continue the grind for those handful of minutes you get to perform or to record. This is an album that could only have been written by living it. There’s no trust fund, no start-up money; this is a record made by a band that works. It’s real, it’s now, it’s a record about frayed nerves, exhaustion, triumph, and being fed up and calling it out. Roadrunners is a records of truths.

Roadrunners, their fourth album in six years, had Eureka California returning to Leeds, UK, to record again at Suburban Home, and this second time around you can hear Eureka California being a bit more at home in the studio. The “play it hard and fast and whatever gets left behind… oh well, it should have kept up” attitude from their last album Versus has been replaced with layered guitars and vocals, sonic experiments, and the extra time to try to get every song just right. Roadrunners is an album where the harsh truths about society and self are hidden in pop songs.

Jake Ward (vocals, guitar) continues to climb to the ranks of Costello, Westerburg, and Mould as songwriter and lyricist with anthems like “Mexican Coke,” which could be placed next to Husker Du or Superchunk and no one would argue. Or “Threads,” which tackles the panic of nuclear war and the fear of who has the launch codes while sounding like Pink Flag-era Wire writing a sunny pop hit about the end of days. Then you have “Gila Monster,” which could be English Settlement XTC, but it doesn’t meander for four minutes -- it’s in and out in roughly two. “Perfect Grammar” covers being told you can do anything only to not live up to your expected limitless potential. Where do you go when even the lowest bar can feel so out of reach at times?

Then you have the other half of the band, Marie A. Uhler (drums), who attacks the drums and holds nothing back. She’s known as one of the most energetic drummers out there with her signature Cousin It hair hanging over her face like a dark veil as she pummels her kit night after night.

As more and more bands release albums that hardly hit above mid-tempo or are based around laptops and beats and write songs that are engineered for moods and playlists, Roadrunners might be of the last great guitar albums. No filler, all hooks, loud drums, and smart lyrics. It’s a record made by a band who live for live performance, who work to tour, who tour to create. Four albums in, they continue doing it on their own terms without worrying about being on trend. Eureka California are worn down but not jaded, and are more driven than ever.

For Roadrunners, our heroes return to the scene with more firepower and tricks than ever. As with 2016’s Versus, Eureka journeyed back to the UK to record at Suburban Home; yet, while that glorious rocket launch blasted the pair’s volume to new limits, this go-round careens even further, bypassing Ward’s old acoustic confessions for an album of HITS, HITS, HITS. - Drowned in Sound
