Release date: October 22, 2021

Jake Ward, frontman for indie rock duo Eureka California, recently took to his home studio and completed work on his first solo album, Never Had A Touch To Lose, to be released under the name Mild Mild Country, via HHBTM Records.

Fans expecting to hear Eureka California’s crunchy, literate indie-rock will be in for a surprise; Never Had A Touch To Lose is a fully instrumental affair. Furthermore, it’s a very epic affair, to boot; the four songs clock in at 48 minutes. But the best part of this is how it sounds: Ward has composed a soundtrack to one hell of a detective movie, one set in LA (which is where the album was recorded) and one can easily hear the streets throughout the album’s groove.

Never Had A Touch To Lose fits nicely between Tangerine Dream’s Thief soundtrack and Wang Chung’s score for To Live And Die In LA. But it’s not all 80s synth landscapes; here and there, you’ll find notes of post-punk, a little shade of Blues, as well as some splendid guitar playing that reminds us of noise rockers Trans Am.

We encourage you to sit down and listen to Never Had A Touch To Lose in one go; it’s an exciting and gritty story that will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Release date: June 18, 2021

In the time when things could still be seen, you might have seen Pearie Sol, keyboardist for DC-area rockers Gauche. Times being as they are, many musical projects have been put on hold, with members having to seek new outlets for their creative talents. For Pearie Sol, his new solo album, Real Happiness—which, he assures us, is not quite a lockdown album, having been conceived largely in 2019.

On first listen, Real Happiness might make you smile. And how could you resist the charm of the dramatic, over-the-top Fred Schneider-like vocals of “Apathy” the jaunty, junkyard Jad Fair-isms of “Slime Pit,” or the catchy, danceable title track? Pearie’s flamboyant, over-the-top style is fun personified and vocalized and all those things in between.

But don’t be fooled; Real Happiness reveals something upon second listen: a very emotional, somewhat melancholic album about life and the frustrations with the foibles of human interaction. Like a cabaret new wave Pagliacci, Pearie Sol’s songs reveal the tears of a clown. Just listen to those last few songs on the record; gone is the cuteness, and Pearie Sol focuses straight on emotion: it’s not wrong of us to say that “Marched On” and “November Frost” deliver powerful showtune ballads a la John Cameron Mitchell with a lyrical style reminiscent of Scott Walker’s first four albums.

And yet, don’t let the melancholy scare you, either; Real Happiness isn’t a sad record, by any means. Instead, it’s a real record documenting real emotions and feelings and observations of a young man living every day of his life the best he can—good or bad, happy or sad. That he’s allowed us to peek into his Real Happiness is an honor one should not take for granted.

Nothing is more American than the flawed idealism of rugged individualism, but any ruggedness you see in Denver's American Culture (the band) only comes from years of touring, living in a GMC van, lugging that bass cab down another steep DIY basement staircase. This is DIY music. But it isn't alone. It's a culture, a community. One that American Culture and so many of their peers have nurtured, town after town, basement after basement, selling one record at a time not to "fans" but to friends. Animals!

American Culture's third album 'For My Animals' was finished pre-COVID and sent to us at HHBTM Records around early March 2020. What would become 'the great isolation of 2020' was just beginning. At that time we didn't know if the world was going to have any use for records. (Or, more specifically, a record industry.) We still don't. Will there still be a world? However, the more we sat with this record through the intense summer of 2020, we decided that absolutely YES... the world needs weirdos making things in every corner, more 4 track song sketches, more xeroxed zines, more hand folded J cards, more screen printed LP jackets. Now more than ever. The industry may die, but this culture is unstoppable.

So, we decided to press it on vinyl. No touring in sight. But it's not just a product. This album was made for hearing. It can't just sit around waiting for industry standards to come back. There was something special about this album. It spoke directly with the listener, one-on-one just like the band has at so many shows. The artwork and packaging had to do the same. Handmade art objects. Each physical record is a labor of love, like the recordings themselves.

'For My Animals' isn't strict about genre. Like their favorites, The Meat Puppets, Crass, The Grateful Dead, The Feelies, this band does whatever they feel. There's bits of noise-pop, outsider lo-fi, washes of psychedelia and even hints of Jamaican dub influence here. It's definitely punk. Punk but not rock. This album seems to be set in a different era. A time when people didn't have much to do but chill at the mall. You made new friends by maybe seeing a Dead Milkmen tattoo peeking out from under a sleeve, or 'Sonic Youth' scrawled in sharpie on the rubber toe of their converse. You didn't know each other, but, also, somehow, you did. Same with this album.

Thanks to critically acclaimed reissues from Athens, Georgia pioneers Pylon and Love Tractor, interest in the back pages of the Athens scene is at an all-time high. What better time, then, to revisit another one of the city’s pioneering band, the beloved Oh-OK? On January 15th, HHBTM Records will be reissuing its 2011 compilation, the long out-of-print The Complete Reissue, available on LP, Cassette and Digital Download. When released in 2011, the LP quickly sold out, and became a sought-after release.

Formed in 1981 as a low-key project between friends, the band’s existence was solidified when local boys R.E.M. needed an opening act. Because of this, Oh-OK always felt like the scene’s kid sister, both figuratively and literally. Unbeknownst at the time, Pylon was about to break up, so Pylon frontwoman Vanessa Hay proudly passed the post-punk baton to friends Linda Hopper and Lynda Stipe (yes, that Stipe). Much like Pylon, the band would sign to legendary DB Records. Oh-OK released but two records; 1982’s Wow Mini Album and 1983’s Furthermore What, both collected here, alongside a handful of live recordings of songs that never made it to tape and two songs “Random” and “Courage Courage” which were set to be their final 7” before they broke up but were never released.

Oh-OK’s existence was brief, but the members went on to greater things. Linda Hopper formed the beloved 1990s alt-rock band Magnapop (In 2019 HHBTM Records proudly released their first major album release in nearly 15 years, The Circle Is Round), Lynda Stipe formed Hetch Hetchyand has a current project Flash to Bang Time which are preparing to release a new album in 2021, whilst late-era guitarist Matthew Sweet formed Matthew Sweet.

Though it’s a shame they never managed a full length proper, The Complete Recordings serves as a fine album in its own right, and is a worthwhile addition to any Athens scene fan’s collection.

When we started Happy Happy Birthday To Me twenty-one years ago, we did so in hopes of sharing the music of the outsider. Simple but smart, earnest but lighthearted -- bands and musicians who channeled a real sense of self without conforming to the musical status quo. People who not just marched to the beat of their own drum, but built that drum themselves. Naturally, we found inspiration in the work of late Texas poet and musician Daniel Johnston—a man more intent in getting his feelings set to tape than he was about sound quality. He understood—even if only on a subconscious level—that the sound of hiss and noise not only didn’t matter, it made his words of hope and heartbreak and fear and desire even more special. We were honored to have him perform at the 2007 Athens Popfest; his set will forever be one of our greatest Popfest performances.

Jump to 2016. We were thrilled to have Daniel Johnston return to Athens Popfest as our special guest and festival headliner. We had to provide his backing band, so we put together an in-house super-duper backing group featuring Jesse Stinnard from Antlered Aunt Lord / Tunabunny and Jake Ward and Marie A. Uhler from Eureka California. Daniel gave us some leeway and some direction for his setlist, and once settled, the band recorded it and sent Daniel a copy so he could rehearse. Unfortunately, the day of the show, the Gulf Coast was hit with a tropical depression, and all flights from Houston were grounded.

We at HHBTM wanted to pay tribute to one of our biggest influences. After some time passed, we listened to the practice recordings, and we knew what we had to do—but we knew we had to make it special. Thus we present you with some of those recordings, The Daniel Johnston Covers Tape, packaged on limited edition cassette with only 100 copies being made. The setlist offers a healthy mix of his classic songs and deeper cuts from all points in his career. Like the spontaneous, raw recordings of his Stress Records releases, Antlered Auntlord: The Daniel Johnston Covers Tape captures a moment in time from when Daniel was an “is” and not a “was.” Any other tribute would have fallen short; Daniel was life, not death, and while his passing should be mourned, his music should never be treated mournfully.

With the impact of Covid-19 on the music industry showing no signs of abating, musicians and music fans around the globe are being forced to get creative, so it comes as no surprise that indie legends The Wedding Present – led by the unparalleled David Gedge – have turned their hands to facilitating a more virtual existence for our listening pleasure.

Released 19th February 2021 via Scopitones (UK / Europe) & HHBTM Records (North America) , Locked Down And Stripped Back includes twelve home recordings of Wedding Present favourites along with two previously unreleased songs: ‘You’re Just A Habit That I’m Trying To Break’ and ‘We Should Be Together’. The latter was originally recorded – but never released – by Britpop favourites, Sleeper. With each band member recording and filming their parts at home due to lockdown restrictions, the recording process was far from easy, but the end result is, as always, typically satisfying.

“As the summer of 2020 wore on it became increasingly obvious that ‘At The Edge of The Sea’ – my annual festival in Brighton – was sadly going the way of other live music events. Following its cancellation, I decided to replace it with an ‘online’ version, presented live from my own living room and featuring home-recorded videos from many of the artists that had appeared at the festival over the years. For The Wedding Present’s contribution, we picked twelve tracks to re-work in a ‘semi-acoustic’ style, and it was fascinating to see how stripped-back arrangements brought out different aspects of the songs. The Seamonsters track ‘Blonde’ was a prime example of this, with a ‘just-two-guitars’ approach resulting in a naïve and moving interpretation,” says Gedge.

From the swagger of ‘A Million Miles’ (George Best, 1987) and ‘California’ (Hit Parade, 1992), to the joyous, previously unreleased ‘We Should Be Together’ – featuring a special guest appearance from Sleeper singer Louise Wener – Locked Down And Stripped Back is an unexpected treat. Elsewhere, a re-working of ‘You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends’ – originally released as a single in 1986 – and a truly epic version of ‘Crawl’ (3 Songs EP, 1990), despite their ‘stripped back’ delivery, still pack a proverbial punch, while ‘You’re Just A Habit That I’m Trying to Break’ – a new song co-written with new guitarist Jon Stewart – is classic Wedding Present. Furthermore, bassist Melanie Howard takes over vocal duties on the sumptuous ‘Sports Car’ (Mini, 1995), while none of Gedge’s famous sardonic wit is lost on the majestic ‘My Favourite Dress’ (George Best, 1987).

On their debut album Big Cats Can Swim, the Athens, Georgia trio Eureka California crash and bash through 11 songs in 28 minutes. The songs are short jolts of indie rock/guitar pop powered by the combo of Marie A. Uhler's simple but kicky drumming and Jake Ward's wiry guitar noise, with Ward's reverb-coated vocal croon riding on top. It's nothing you haven't heard before -- lots of loud/quiet dynamics, ragged verses, diffidently anthemic choruses, and ramshackle energy -- from bands like Pavement, Butterglory, and Boyracer. Comes with mp3 download emailed after purchase!
